Equity at Every Stage of Breast Cancer

The Breast Cancer Equity Initiative is building a national movement to close gaps in access, treatment, and survivorship support.

From early detection to survivorship, too many patients face barriers that impact outcomes. BCEI is working to ensure every person receives the care, support, and advocacy they deserve.

Mission

The Breast Cancer Equity Initiative (BCEI) is dedicated to addressing disparities in breast cancer care, for women and men,  through advocacy, patient support, research collaboration, and community engagement.

We believe that where someone lives, their income, or their support system should never determine the quality of care they receive.

Suncera Johnson, a breast cancer survivor turned advocate is leading this initiative.

The 2027 BCEI Summit

In 2027, BCEI will host its inaugural Breast Cancer Equity Summit in Myrtle Beach, SC

The Summit will bring together patients, survivors, clinicians, researchers, and advocates for a day focused on solutions, collaboration, and empowerment.

The evening will conclude with the Pink and Pearls Ball, a fundraising celebration honoring those working to change the future of breast cancer care.

What We Are Building

  • National Breast Cancer Equity Summit
Bringing together patients, clinicians, researchers, advocates, and policy leaders.

  • Patient Access and Support Initiatives
Programs designed to remove barriers to screening, treatment, and survivorship resources.

  • Research and Health System Partnerships
Collaborations with leading institutions to address inequities in care.

  • Community Advocacy
Elevating the voices of patients and survivors to shape better policies and outcomes.

We are intentionally building this organization with both service and policy impact in mind from day one, and are currently identifying individuals who can help anchor two critical board functions: Governance and Financial Leadership.

These are not ceremonial roles. They are foundational to how BCEI will scale, partner, and lead.

Governance Lead (Board Governance / Compliance Chair)
This individual will help establish and guide the structural integrity of BCEI, ensuring we are built for long-term impact and national expansion.

Responsibilities include:
• Developing and refining governance frameworks, bylaws, and board policies
• Supporting board composition and recruitment strategy
• Ensuring compliance with 501(c)(3) standards and ethical practices
• Establishing accountability systems, including board evaluations and succession planning
• Advising on governance structures that support both service delivery and policy initiatives

Financial Lead (Treasurer / Finance Chair)
This individual will help build financial credibility, transparency, and sustainability from the ground up.

Responsibilities include:
• Overseeing budget development and financial planning aligned with BCEI’s mission
• Establishing financial systems, reporting structures, and internal controls
• Supporting audit readiness and IRS compliance (including 990 oversight)
• Providing clear, board-level financial reporting
• Advising on sponsorship strategy, revenue modeling, and long-term financial sustainability

Role Structure (Hybrid Engagement)
Both roles are designed as hybrid positions, combining strategic oversight with early-stage buildout. This includes helping to establish foundational systems while also guiding long-term direction as the organization grows.
